Rural Frontier Entrepreneurship (RFE) in Southern Middle Tennessee

Across Tennessee’s southern and middle regions a new wave of innovation is taking root; one that  blends community, education, technology, and manufacturing into a powerful force for local growth. This emerging model, known as Rural Frontier Entrepreneurship (RFE), stands for much more than starting businesses; it’s about creating ecosystems that keep opportunity close to home.

What is RFE?

Rural Frontier Entrepreneurship (RFE) is the creation and development of innovative and sustainable enterprises that leverage community assets, experiential educational partnerships, advanced technology, and localized manufacturing to strengthen economic resilience and social well-being in rural areas. RFE empowers new and existing businesses to build and fortify meaningful ventures where resources may be limited, but creativity and connection thrive.

The Role of the NOVA Entrepreneur Center in Supporting SEDI.

The NOVA EC is supported by a Tennessee grant awarded and stewarded by LaunchTN. Part of our mission is to support SEDI. In TN SEDI, stands for “Socially and Economically Disadvantaged Individuals” – a designation used through the state’s “Find Tennessee” and SSBCI2.0 programs. These initiatives ensure that state and federal funding reaches entrepreneurs who have historically faced barriers to capital access especially in the rural and underrepresented communities of Southern Middle Tennessee. Supporting SEDI-owned businesses and helping to create new ones strengthens the backbone of local economies. It helps to promote equity in entrepreneurship and makes sure that innovation truly reflects the diversity and resilience of Tennessees’s people.

Powering Rural Progress Through Local Innovation

The word “localized” captures the spirit of Rural Frontier Entrepreneurship. Localized innovation emerges through the unique assets, skills, and traditions of each individual community. Localized education partnerships and ventures connect global tools to local talent. By investing in local approaches, rural communities don’t just adapt to change , they define it and own it.

Why it Matters

As Nashville,TN and Huntsville, AL grow closer together, the regions of Southern Middle Tennessee and it’s economy are transforming through collaboration and innovation. As community leaders, educators, business owners, and entrepreneurs work together, we’re proving that the next big idea doesn’t have to come from a big city, it can start in our hometown. Rural Frontier Entrepreneurship empowers rural regions to become engines of innovation, sustainability, and profitability.
